A great dancing clip

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

I’m not sure if this is JUST a promotion for stridegum as teh ending would make you think. But It is still a really good watch. There is something that kind of resonates seeing so many places and so many people all dancing together.

Focus your Attention

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I just wanted to share/remember this great blog series from Merlin Mann at 43folders.com that outlines how important it is to have a limits about who, when and how much access other people have to contact us.   Here’s a bite of it.

“For myself, I think it’s critical to set reasonable expectations about how, when, and where people can expect to have authentic, honest-to-God contact with us, and here’s why: if you leave every channel open to everybody and anybody, all the time and without limit, you necessarily prevent yourself from ever stepping away from the fray for long enough to focus. You’ll never make the time that it takes to produce the sort of good work that theoretically made you so appealing in the first place.”

How much are we all paying for internet. What do you recommend…

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I was just doing a little research about the options that you have for high speed internet. I`m working with Shaw now, mostly because I have a server and Vonage at home, and I think Telus really hates you if you try and run a server on their ADSL service. But supposing you don`t have a server at home, who do you go with. Especially if you`re just going to be web browsing and a little email.

Here are the two options that I see:

Shaw
High Speed Lite (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/High-Speed+Lite/ )
$19.95 for the first 6 months then $29.95 after that although if you buy the required modem you can get a $5 discount. No contract length.

Telus
High Speed Lite (http://www.mytelus.com/internet/highspeed/display.do )
You can see the details on this plan half way down the page. $11.95 for the first 6 months then 16.95 after that, but you have to sign a service agreement (1, 2 or 3 years)

General Comparison
The download-upload speeds are pretty similar
Shaw has better service than Telus when something goes wrong, in my experience
Telus is much cheaper than Shaw judging by their adverts

Managing RSS Feeds

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I'm all over the map on the whole RSS news feeds phenomena. So much news right at your finger tips. And yet, it feels incredibly distracting and daunting. Plus I'm not really interested in most of it. So, I've just finished one week of zero news feeds and it was pretty good. As a matter of fact I didn't really miss it all that much, but surely total elimination of RSS feeds isn't the only way to avoid feeling like I'm constantly missing something. The entry 43folders.com

So, I'm trying out a new technique, the google reader folders approach first shown to me on 43folders.com in Organizing my feeds by their importance to me.

So my folders are
Freestuff – the place where I watch for free things offered locally that I might want
Can't Miss – Blogs of my friends
News – The News
Not News – Blogs that I read for general interest
Trivial – Blogs I should probably not be wasting my time on.

BC Ferries now has sales!

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

This is a tip from my sister!

In an interesting twist of fate, with BC Ferries becoming more and more like a private corp we have an upside. SALES. Yeah. So you can get a cheap ticket on the BC Ferries on the Duke Point-Tsawassen route Saturday and Sunday in the winter. And Tsawassen-Swartz Bay route Sunday on or before 9am.

Save a passenger, and for an under-height vehicle.

Save yo' money.

NOTE from Jason: Also, if you have a BCAA (or any CAA) membership, you can get a deal on the 9pm ferry.

Drive on passengers only have to pay for the driver and the car, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th passengers travel free.

Electrolytic Rust Removal

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I haven't tried this yet but, Instructables has an awesome looking series on removing rust, using a small automotive charger, rebar, washing soda and wire.

I'm definitely going to give this a try!

Host it yourself or no.

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

We've got a lot of choices these days about how you want to do things. It seems like with the blogging thing you can either choose to host it yourself and have all the headaches (and fun) of having your own server. Or you can go in for a hosted system like Blogger.com

Host it yourself.
Pros:
– complete control.
– use whatever software you like
– security is in your hands (this could be a con I suppose)
– you can always get at your data
– down time isn't some body elses fault

Cons:
– Down time is a lot more likely
– Stuck in THEIR software
– They can always shut you down
– Not as well indexed?
