I just had to remove all the garbage that I had written into the files in /etc and then go through the same connection process with Blueman and it works! I don't know why that seemed so hard, previously, anyways, the above documents the new system in all it's shining simplicity. And contrary to the length of this article it once bluetooth is live on the machine it really is pretty easy to use. So getting the keyboard working on the T61 was really simple.
